Barbie® You Can Be A Designer Fashion Reinvention Competition
Oh My Wow!
This competition was launched in tandem with the line of Barbie® Extra dolls. The collection is all about celebrating individuality and self-expression, and that is exactly what we asked of aspiring fashion designers (aged 5-12 years old) across Malaysia. Barbie® wanted to see how they would design their dream outfit and, with the help of a fashion designer, bring the winning ideas to life.
This was Thinking Cap’s first foray into the fabulous world of fashion and who better to join us than fashion designer, Kittie Yiyi, and fashion stylist, Min Luna? Both served as our competition guest judges and mentors and brought such a warm, personable energy to each session they were a part of. Our winners absolutely loved every moment with them.
While this experience was supposed to take place in person, the pandemic demanded that we move things online to keep everyone safe. It was a real challenge to translate what was supposed to be a very close-up, tactile experience into something that could take place over the internet but we were determined to make it feel special and give these kids a ride they’d remember for years to come.
We sent all the tools and materials they needed to participate in their mentorships directly to their homes, doing our best to add personal touches where we could. Our boring Zoom meeting room took on many different personas over the competition, transforming from a Virtual Presentation Hall, to a Virtual Studio for our fashion mentorships, to a Virtual Runway for the final Fashion Showcase and a celebration of our winners’ incredible journey with us.
And what a journey it was! We bore witness to the incredible resilience of our young winners; learned about fashion design, styling, and confidence from our mentors; and got to create an experience that was as fashion forward as it was child-centered.
Sundays with Barbie®
Sundays with Barbie® was an episodic livestream series formulated under the Barbie® Fashion Reinvention Campaign launched in tandem with the line of Barbie® Extra dolls. We’ve planned many a panel show and structured dialogue, but this was our first go at a live show.
Each episode was themed around a positive attribute of the spirit of Barbie® Fashion Reinvention: Creativity, Self-Expression, and Diversity and Self-Acceptance. We selected TV host, Megan Tan, to share in our excitement and to play host for each of the three sessions. Megan brought both experienced professionalism and a genuine joy to the project - what a superstar!
Our guest speakers were all selected for their integral contributions to the fashion industry in Malaysia as well as for their inspirational stories: Fashion Designer Kittie Yiyi and Fashion Stylist Min Luna (Creativity), Fashion Entrepreneur Tan Veen Dee (Self-Expression), and Fashion Models and Advocates Nalisa Alia Amin and Sonia Danita Charles (Diversity and Self-Acceptance). The idea was to inspire young viewers to keep dreaming big by exposing them to a range of role models who are killing it in their fields.
Each session required meticulous planning and careful research to ensure the structure we were building would properly accommodate the rich stories of our guest speakers, while also adequately carrying the brand’s message that You Can Be Anything. Authenticity was very important to these shows, so we didn’t script our guests, choosing instead to clear a platform for them to speak from the heart.
